Description:This material does NOT generate grass blades. I used grass-O-matic for that. In addition to that, I know this isn't the HDR/balanced scene, but the flat lighting in the default scene doesn't properly illustrate this material...plus this sun/sky combo is more appropriate for something like grass anyway. There are three variations in this multi-material. So ideally you'll want to use multiple grass "layers" and vary the color for some randomness. You may want to explore using a wider range of colors than I did in this example material to further randomize the look.

Pawel: I'll see what I can do.

Daniel: I normally create three grass-o-matic objects. One is for short curly grass blades, one for the more straight/"normal" grass blades, and the last is taller and I may even use the clumps option on this object.

Title: Grass-o-Matic
You said you used grass-o-matic however your file version said that it is 3ds max 2010. I was wondering where you got grass-o-matic or how you got it to work with 2010 version. I have looked for a compatible version of grass-o-matic with 2010 but I am unable to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Aaron - Go to http://maxplugins.de/ and run a search for "grass" in the 2010 section of the site and you'll find it.

Juan - Check the FAQ for instructions on using a .mat file. - http://www.mrmaterials.com/faq...m-faq.html

Title: What are you applying it to?
Are you applying it to actual displaced or proxy grass blades? This material does not create the actual grass blades, Jeff suggest that you use Grass-0-Matic or similar.

Title: What?
Do you have 3DS Max installed on the computer you opened the archived file with? The file contains the preview image "Grass_material.jpg" and the material file "JP_Multi-blade_Grass.mat", your system must either have some sort of virus or blocker that renames zipped files or doesn't have max installed and Office or similar tried to interpret what the file was and gave it a different extension.

In any even, the file is correct so I would follow the suggestion posted in FAQ and numerous material comments and download using Firefox or other browser other than IE as there seems to be a problem with downloading ZIPs atleast from here at times.

Thank you,

Russell Thomas

FWIW when I installed Microsoft Office it automagically associated itself with .mat files as well. You can either just ignore that fact and simply open the file with the material editor as usual or you can change the .mat file extension association in windows...but I wouldn't bother changing the file association since you have to open the .mat file with the material editor 3ds Max will be running anyway. It's not like you'll double click a .mat file to start 3ds Max or something along those lines.

I would love a brief tutorial on how this was made. That being said I would vote that this is the most complex material on this site to date. I finish grad school in six weeks, and I'll upload what I have made for my final images then. I feel that I have not provided enough in return from what I take from this site.

Title: grass doenst looks like here
Hello Jeff,

your mats are very great and all other works but if I loading this grass mat I see only a green area but not blades of grass. What`s wrong? So even in mat editor view looks not like grass, only green with noise.

The very first sentence in the material description states that it does not generate grass blades. If you read some of the post above it is explained that the material is for APPLYING to geometry or proxies, the author specifically suggest using Grass-O-Matic.

Hope this clears up the confusion.
